The Apache project was originally created to support the development of the Apache Web server. Apache got its name from the fact that it started as a series of patches to the original Cern Web server. The name was a play on words on “a patchy” Web server. Apache is a proven product and has been the most widely used Web server on the Internet for several years, with more sites running.Apache than all other Web servers combined.
Apache has also become an umbrella for a large number of open source projects that share the Apache license.
