FireBird:
Firebird is based on a Borland product called Interbase. Interbase had been available as a commercial product for many years. During July of 2000, Borland decided to release Interbase version 6.0 as an open source project. This new project attracted a large following of open source developers who were already familiar with Interbase. However, this community did not see eye to eye with the way Borland wanted to manage the project. Instead, they created their own open source community around the product, and named the new product Firebird. This new project is hosted on Source Forge. Because Borland’s open source effort never quite took off, Borland abandoned its open source support and moved back into providing commercial support for the Interbase product. The open source community, on the other hand, has continued development and support of their own open source development branch separately and divergently from Borland’s. Attempts to merge the efforts so far have failed. The Firebird product summary is shown in the following table. Because of its heritage as a commercial product, there is a rich set of professional-quality document files for Firebird. Most of these are available as .pdf files that can be downloaded from the project site. The current Firebird project boasts the participation by an active community of over 60 developers. These are not corporately sponsored developers, but are developers who also actively use the product. Third-party service and support for Firebird and Interbase can be purchased from IBPhoenix (http://www.ibphoenix.com/).
