PostgreSQL
PostgreSQL seems to be the granddaddy of all open source database projects. PostgreSQL evolved from database research at the University of California at Berkeley that began in the late 1970s and spawned a number of commercial products. In 1996, it became clear that there was great demand for an open source relational database. The PostgreSQL project was born. The work was based on efforts that had been performed earlier at Berkeley but the new effort was to occur outside of Berkley . The following table provides a summary of PostgreSQL. The PostgreSQL community inherited a huge project. It took a while for the PostgreSQL community to develop and master the large code base that they had inherited. Initially, the community focused on problem resolution and bug
fixes.
As the project matured, the developers had a better grasp of the structure of the code and now PosgreSQL development continues at a rapid pace. Unfortunately, although several companies produce commercial Windows
ports of PostgreSQL, there is no open source implementation of the PosgreSQL server available for Windows (there are an ODBC driver and a Windows client available). Because of its history as an object-relational database, PostgreSQL boasts some of the richest support for new data types of any database software. The project has also paid close attention to detail in implementing the SQL standards and represents one of the most complete SQL implementations available. PostgreSQL is an open source project in the truest sense of open source community. No one individual company sponsors development; and developers and contributors from all over the world participate in its development.
