Once, while waiting in the lobby of Chrysler Headquarters in Auburn Hills Michigan, John noticed a display case that contained a toolbox and several apparently high-quality precision tools. As he read the tag, he learned that the toolbox and the tools themselves had been handcrafted by the founder of Chrysler. In those early days of the automotive industry, the machinists who created the engines, transmissions, and other parts of those early automobiles had to start by creating their own tools. Today, things have changed; even if you were to build an automobile by hand, you would most likely use tools created by others. Although today’scraftsman is not likely to have to build his own tools, he knows the tools and understands how and when to use them. Similarly, years ago in the software field, many of us started out by creating our own programming tools. Now, more often than not, we use tools created by others, and we benefit from what has been learned by those who have gone before us
