The Product-Selection Process

You’ll want to establish a process for selecting software components that ensures you are consistent in your decision making. The process must also provide you with a means of demonstrating that the decision you make is not flawed. Or, if the decision was flawed, the process should then help you to fix the mistakes so that they are not repeated. The process should minimize dependency on special skills or knowledge by the people involved in the

decision-making process. However, special skills and knowledge can certainly benefit you by reducing the time to complete the selection process.

This product-selection process is designed to work in any situation where a product is an integral part of a software project. It has the following four stages:

       

·         Market survey

·         Features and needs analysis

·         Evaluation

·         Selection

Each of these stages is discussed in detail in the following sections.
