CHAPTER 5
Powering the Web Tier with a Server Container
Web servers and servlet containers work hand in hand to deliver Web-based applications. Today, Web-based applications are a common way to deliver enterprise applications. There are a number of reasons why this is true:
· Web-based applications can be centrally maintained and updated, reducing the support and maintenance costs of delivering an application to many desktops.
· Information presented in Web-based applications can be published faster through the Web, making the information more timely.
· Information is updated simultaneously for all users, so all users act on the same information.
· Users do not have to be tied directly to a corporate local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN) because the applications can be accessed through the ubiquitous World Wide Web.
This chapter looks at open source servlet containers and their relationship to Web servers
