The Web tier contains the elements of an enterprise platform that are responsible for delivering the presentation layers of an application. The foundation of the Web tier is the Web server. In the J2EE world, the servlet container may supplement, or even implement, the Web Server. In this section, we explore the relationship between the Web server and the servlet container by defining these components and gaining an understanding of how they interact with each other. We also position these components within our J2EE platform.
