The Features and Needs Analysis

After the market survey is completed, you need to determine the breadth of features available within the product category. Each product will have features or attributes that help distinguish it from the other products. These features should be noted. Agood way to do this is to create a table. Table 3.1 illustrates features of various Java-based text editors. In this case, the features are listed down the rows, and the products are listed across the columns. An X in a cell indicates that the product in that row contains that feature; a blank space in a column indicates that the feature is missing from that product.

Typically, the list of features for a product category will be much longer. We have shortened the list for illustrative purposes. If you are already aware of the features that are important to your project, then you may decide to limit the list to only those features. If you are not aware of the types of features that a product is likely to offer, you may find it helpful to list all the features available in all products and then select those that are most important to your project. Many features will also have some attribute or unit of measurement associated with them. For example, the levels of undo capability shown in the chart above have varying values; these should be captured whenever possible.
